We visited a lighthouse during our recent holiday.
It took about 300 steps to get to the top, and my son made sure he was the first to get there.
When I eventually reached the top (a few *cough* seconds *cough* later), he immediately warned me not to lean over the edge.
The true love of a child
I told him not to worry because I wouldn’t fall over the side.
Before I could bask in the warm glow of joy from my son’s concern for my safety..
He told me he wasn’t worried about me.
He was worried about my phone.
Once my ego recovered, I reassured him that if anything happened to my phone, there was no need to worry because I had a recent backup that I could use with another phone anyway.*
He wasn’t happy with this response.
The true priorities of a child
That’s when I realised that he was worried about my phone..
.. because I use my phone to pay for things.
Things like the ice cream that I had promised to buy him after our trip to the lighthouse!
Once I assured him that I also had some cash with me, he nodded enthusiastically and walked away.
Leaving me standing there, worrying about whether I should lean over the edge..
What’s my point?
Just like my son, our clients want to know that we are managing the risks that could impact them.
But usually, our clients’ concerns go beyond our ability to pay for ice cream!
